چکیده

Optimal error estimates for the pressure stabilized Petrov–Galerkin (PSPG) method for the evolutionary Stokes equations are proved, in the case of regular solutions, without restriction on the length of the time step. These results clarify the “instability of the discrete pressure for small time steps” reported in the literature. First, the limit situation of the continuous-in-time discretization is considered and second the numerical analysis for the backward Euler scheme is carried out. The main results are applicable to higher order finite elements. The analytical results are strongly based on an appropriate approach for computing the initial velocity, which is suggested in this paper. Numerical studies confirm the theoretical results, showing in particular that this instability does not occur for the proposed initial condition.

Analysis of the PSPG method for the transient Stokes’ problem

We propose a new analysis for the PSPG method applied to the transient Stokes’ problem. Stability and convergence are obtained under different conditions on the discretization parameters depending on the approximation used in space. For the pressure we prove optimal stability and convergence only in the case of piecewise affine approximation under the standard condition on the time-step. Finall...

Analysis of a Second-order, Unconditionally Stable, Partitioned Method for the Evolutionary Stokes-darcy Model

We propose and analyze a partitioned numerical method for the fully evolutionary Stokes-Darcy equations that model the coupling between surface and groundwater flows. The proposed method uncouples the surface from the groundwater flow by using the implicit-explicit combination of the Crank-Nicolson and Leapfrog methods for the discretization in time with added stabilization terms. We prove that...

Long time stability of four methods for splitting the evolutionary Stokes-Darcy problem into Stokes and Darcy subproblems

A . This report analyzes the long time stability of four methods for non-iterative, sub-physics, uncoupling for the evolutionary Stokes-Darcy problem. The four methods uncouple each time step into separate Stokes and Darcy solves using ideas from splitting methods. Three methods uncouple sequentially while one is a parallel uncoupling method. We prove long time stability of four splitting based...

Numerical Analysis of Modular Regularization Methods for the Bdf2 Time Discretization of the Navier-stokes Equations

We consider an uncoupled, modular regularization algorithm for approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The method is: Step 1: Advance the NSE one time step, Step 2: Regularize to obtain the approximation at the new time level. Previous analysis of this approach has been for simple time stepping methods in Step 1 and simple stabilizations in Step 2. In this report we extend the mathematica...

Optimization with the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations as constraints

In this paper, optimal distributed control of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations is considered. The control problem involves the minimization of a measure of the distance between the velocity field and a given target velocity field. A mixed numerical method involving a quasi-Newton algorithm, a novel calculation of the gradients and an inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes solver, to find the opt...
